Truth and Reconciliation is more than words. They must be equaled with action. As a means of acknowledging the land and people where we are privileged to live and work, we sought out the wisdom of  Lynn Gehl, an Algonquin Anishinaabe-kwe from the Ottawa River Valley. Sidney Lumet directed some of the greatest films in Hollywood history, from 12 Angry Men and Fail Safe to Network and Dog Day Afternoon. He began very young as a performer on the New York Yiddish stage, and came up through both theatre and the early days of live television.

His bits if wisdom are always valuable signposts for creative artists. "While the goal of all movies is to entertain, the kind of film in which I believe goes one step further," he once said. "It compels the spectator to examine one facet or another of his own conscience. It stimulates thought and sets the mental juices flowing."

He also believed: "In drama, the characters should determine the story. In melodrama, the story determines the characters."

In one interview, he talked about how family conflict was at the root of all drama going back to the early Greek plays.

Burning Passions Theatre has always held Lumet in high esteem for his body of work and insights into the creative process. We are currently in rehearsal for a family drama of our own, Laurel Smith's new play Daughters of Khadija, in which the uncovering of family secrets leads to a quest for justice.

It plays four times November 28 and 29, 1:30 and 7:30 pm each day, in Ottawa, and seating is limited, so book your pay-what-you-wish tickets today at bptheatre.ca or 613-695-9330.

In 2019, Burning Passions Theatre staged one of the longest running hits in Broadway history, John van Druten's The Voice of the Turtle. The WW2-era play was ahead of its time with strong roles for women (here played by Rachel Fischer and Lana Sugarman).

Directed by Laurel Smith, it also featured Douglas Walker, with set design by Holly Meyer-Dymny, lighting by Wesley McKenzie, and costumes by Renate Seiler.

The company's upcoming production in Ottawa is Smith's new play about how uncovering family secrets leads to a quest for justice, Daughters of Khadija, playing November 28 and 29 at 1:30 and 7:30 pm. Tickets now available at bptheatre.ca or 613-695-9330!
