Truth and Reconciliation is more than words. They must be equaled with action. As a means of acknowledging the land and people where we are privileged to live and work, we sought out the wisdom of  Lynn Gehl, an Algonquin Anishinaabe-kwe from the Ottawa River Valley. The Ottawa Muslim Women’s Organization, along with Burning Passions Theatre, invites Muslim women in the National Capital Region to take part in a number of community consultations on June 20 (English) and a Date to be announced (French and English) as part of the development of a new play on gendered Islamophobia. The issues identified in these consultations, facilitated by Dr. Monia Mazigh and Dr. Leila Benhadjoudja, will help inform the content of the English-language play to be performed later this year by community members.

Producing a play about and featuring Muslim women confronting discrimination is a powerful way of putting a human face on a crisis that too often gets reduced to statistics.

Each discussion will last 2 hours. Snacks and refreshments will be served.

This project is funded in part by the Government of Canada.

Burning Passions Theatre celebrated World Theatre Day at the Rideau-Rockliffe Crc with the final two performances of our Seniors Sharing Stories play A Circle Complete. Written by Laurel Smith, and featuring (left to right) Tammy Southin, Joanne Veillette, Deborah Bolton and Bonnie McDougall, with stage management and music design by Matthew Behrens, the run of the show was well attended, featuring powerful post-show audience talkbacks on the challenges and joys facing our community elders.

Special thanks to all who attended and supported this 3-year project, and stay tuned for more exciting projects coming soon!
