Land Acknowledgement

Truth and Reconciliation is more than words. They must be equaled with action. As a means of acknowledging the land and people where we are privileged to live and work, we sought out the wisdom of Lynn Gehl, an Algonquin Anishinaabe-kwe from the Ottawa River Valley. To most of the world, he was the inimitable Captain Picard.

But long before he took to the galaxy, Patrick Stewart grew up impoverished in a home dominated by an abusive father whose mistreatment of his mother later led Stewart to become a vocal advocate to end male violence against women.

Stewart attributed his acting career to an English teacher who "put a copy of Shakespeare in [Stewart's] hand" and told him to get up and perform. At the age of 15, he left school to dedicate himself to local theatre. He supported himself with work as a newspaper reporter and obituary writer, though eventually missed so much time on the beat that he was delivered an ultimatum to either choose journalism or acting. The rest is history. He went on to train at the fabled Bristol Old Vic alongside Peter O'Toole and, among others, the father of Burning Passions Theatre's associate producer.

Stewart began his career in 1966 as a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. He made his Broadway theatre debut in 1971 in a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. In 1979, he received the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in Antony and Cleopatra in the West End.

Later in life, after consulting with his brothers, he went public about the hell that was his childhood home in response to a campaign by Amnesty International on ending male violence against women.

In 2006 Stewart made a video on such violence, and became a patron Refuge, a UK charity for women survivors.

In 2013 Stewart was speaking at Comicpalooza in Texas when a woman in the audience thanked him for his activism; she then asked what it was he was most proud of that wasn’t related to acting. He said that it was getting more men to realize the role they have to play in ending male violence. “The people who could do most to improve the situation of so many women and children are in fact, men,” he said. “It’s in our hands...I do what I do in my mother's name because I couldn't help her then. Now I can.”

Burning Passions Theatre tonight lowers its metaphorical marquee lights in Stewart's memory.

Our company began in 1997 with a musical about male violence against women that toured Ontario and raised money for women's shelters.

Almost 30 years later, we have a new production November 28 and 29 in Ottawa, Laurel Smith's Daughters of Khadija, for four performances (1:30 and 7:30 pm each day).

During the late Chadwick Boseman's career, he appeared in a number of projects spanning both blockbuster and independent films, and received various accolades, including an Actor Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Primetime Emmy Award, in addition to nominations for an Academy Award and a BAFTA Award.

Born in South Carolina, Boseman studied directing at Howard University and began his career in theatre. Boseman won a Drama League Directing Fellowship and an acting AUDELCO, along with receiving a Jeff Award nomination for his 2005 play Deep Azure.

That notion of focusing on the story and not the audience is a critical component of making theatre real for audiences, a value Burning Passions Theatre holds dear.

We're excited to be premiering a new play, Daughters of Khadija, by Laurel Smith, November 28 and 29, Ottawa, with four performances only. Book early to ensure you get a seat as tickets are limited! Visit bptheatre.ca or call 613-695-9330 ...
