In a story inspired in part by disturbing Ottawa headlines, Burning Passions Theatre premieres a new play, Daughters of Khadija, November 28 and 29 at 223 Main Street in Ottawa (Saint Paul University Amphitheatre). It features an amazing troupe of performers who are part of the company's theatre-in-the-community training program.

Written and directed by Ottawa theatre artist Laurel Smith, it’s co-sponsored by the Ottawa Muslim Women’s Organization and supported in part by the Government of Canada.

“This play follows a group of Ottawa women – mothers, daughters, friends – as they navigate their daily lives, each clinging to their dreams while carrying the unwelcome weight of how others often unfairly view them,” says Smith. “This story is ultimately about finding the courage of one’s voice, overcoming obstacles, and living inside one’s hope.”

Troupe member Suzanne Saleh Ragheb’s painting, “Absence,” is the signature image for the production.

Daughters of Khadija will run for four performances: November 28 and 29, both days at 1:30 pm and 7:30 pm, with pay-what-you-wish tickets available at bptheatre.ca and 613-695-9330.

Burning Passions Theatre has long engaged in artists-in-the-community projects. For five years, we ran Listen Up, Lanark!, a platform to produce plays about the realities of life for rural teenagers facing often unaddressed challenges.

With each work we have undertaken, we are privileged to partner with folks who bring a critical educational foundation to the works we create.

"Every Friday" is a community-engaged play written by Laurel Smith, inspired by stories from the #MeToo movement about the aftermath of sexual assault and harassment. It toured Lanark County youth centres and schools in 2018, generating important discussions about how to end the plague of male violence against women and young people.

We were thrilled to be able to partner with the dynamo community consultant and educator Julie Lalonde (here speaking at one of our post-show talkbacks with audience members) on "Every Friday". Lalonde's remarkable book, Resilience is Futile: The Life and Death and Life of Julie S. Lalonde, is a must-read.

Our upcoming project, part of the Muslim Women Sharing Stories initiative, will premiere a new play by Smith, running November 28 and 29 in Ottawa. Stay tuned for more details!
