Truth and Reconciliation is more than words. They must be equaled with action. As a means of acknowledging the land and people where we are privileged to live and work, we sought out the wisdom of Lynn Gehl, an Algonquin Anishinaabe-kwe from the Ottawa River Valley. Burning Passions Theatre tonight lowers its metaphorical lights in honour of Noreen Tyers, who will be a sorely missed example of what it means to walk this earth as a truly kind, creative, compassionate soul. When we opened the Classic Theatre Festival in Perth, she volunteered for our board of directors, a role she took on for a decade. She was a constant presence at the theatre as a Front of House member, artist and poet who shared wonderful stories with audience members while making us all laugh with her salty sense of humour. After she lost her beloved Gerry, she had to move out of her beloved home across from the high school, but remained a committed community member who shared unique stories of local history. Noreen was admittedly a shy person, but she held strong core values rooted in standing up for the downtrodden and demonized, and called out a wrong when she saw it.
We will miss Noreen's warm sense of humour, her endless creativity, and her shining example of kindness and always working to bring out the best of what it means to be human. We hope to carry on that legacy in our own lives and work.
